The journalistic dialogue: Sport

  • Pieter-Jan Calcoen (33) is a football journalist and news editor at the sports desk of Het Nieuwsblad. He has covered major tournaments including the Women’s Euro, as well as the men’s Euro and World Cup, and is a regular guest on the football podcast Sjotcast. In 2022, he co-wrote a book on women’s football with Tessa Wullaert, Belgium’s most famous player. Whereas older colleagues once had easy access to athletes in the dressing room or could attend every training session, Pieter-Jan has noticed since starting his career in 2013 that players — and their clubs — are increasingly shutting their doors. His solution? To invest even more in building and maintaining a strong network.

Four themes, four real-world cases. Every newsroom faces similar challenges, yet each finds its own way forward. In this journalistic dialogue, we’ll discuss what works, where the friction lies, and what we can learn from one another.

It started with football, but by now, getting close to athletes and coaches is a challenge across almost every sport. Commercial interests, press officers and media deals form significant barriers to spontaneous encounters or open conversations. And it doesn’t stop at sports. The same trend is emerging in culture, politics and other fields, where communication is increasingly tightly controlled. How do you navigate these competing interests as a journalist? And how do you keep producing distinctive stories in a world of closing doors?
