Getting started with generative large language models and AI in the newsroom

  • Lisa Schetgen is a data scientist at Mediahuis. Prior to this, she was a PhD candidate at Ghent University, specialising in predictive modelling and the natural language processing of social media data. She now works for the Data & Insights team at Mediahuis, focusing on AI applications and innovations for editorial teams.
  • Yves Van Dooren is a Data & Insights expert at Mediahuis Group. Having joined the company over 20 years ago as a project manager for De Standaard, he later led the Belgian Traffic Team, developing newsroom dashboards and data products. He now uses his extensive experience to share ideas, provide insights, and introduce company-wide data concepts, such as Article DNA.

In this workshop, Lisa Schetgen and Yves Van Dooren will explain you briefly how LLM's (large language models) work, and in what situations they can be useful or even useless in the newsroom. You'll learn how to better prompt for applications like Microsoft Copilot, Claude or ChatGPT, and get to know new AI-based tools to better search the web and our news archives.
