In this workshop, Lisa Schetgen and Yves Van Dooren will explain you briefly how LLM's (large language models) work, and in what situations they can be useful or even useless in the newsroom. You'll learn how to better prompt for applications like Microsoft Copilot, Claude or ChatGPT, and get to know new AI-based tools to better search the web and our news archives.

In this online session, Madeleine Baran, host of the award-winning podcast In the Dark, will share how she and her team select stories, prepare interviews through role play and structure narratives using storyboarding. She will also reflect on why audio is such a powerful medium for investigative journalism, offering insights from her team's reporting on the Haditha killings. Facilitated by our colleague Rik van Hulst, this session offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the most respected investigative podcasts.

Wat kun je als journalist met Open Source Intelligence, de onderzoekstechniek waarbij je publieke data gebruikt om tot verhalen te komen? Soms vergt de aanpak het gebruik van hele geavanceerde middelen, vaak is het ook een kwestie van zorgvuldig kijken en van geduld. Van accepteren dat een onderzoek na maanden hard werk toch te weinig oplevert voor een journalistieke productie. Maar ook van intens tevreden zijn als het wel lukt.

Binnen Mediahuis zijn titels als NRC en De Standaard al enige tijd bezig met de journalistieke inzet van OSINT-technieken. In deze workshop leggen hun journalisten graag aan collega’s uit wat werkt en wat (nog) niet. Ze bieden inzicht in eigen onderzoeken en geven tips om zelf praktisch aan de slag te kunnen gaan.

Waarom doen we wéér een interview met de burgemeester? Waarom komt die nieuwe rubriek niet uit de verf? Wat ‘moeten we’ met TikTok? En waarom eindigen brainstorms met een muur vol post-its, maar weinig concrete plannen? In deze sessie duiken we in de kunst van het goed georganiseerde, productieve redactionele brainstormen. Ja, er zijn post-its (en stiften in alle kleuren van de regenboog). Ja, we gaan het hebben over Design Thinking. Maar het belangrijkste: we laten concrete technieken zien die je meteen kunt toepassen. En natuurlijk gaan we ze uitproberen. Vergaderen op een redactie is soms als in een vijver vol ideeën, maar de vissen roepen terug. Allemaal tegelijk. Met een megafoon. Tijd om het net wat slimmer uit te gooien. Na deze workshop weet je hoe je kan brainstormen met minder gezucht, meer ideeën en iets dat lijkt op een plan.

In this interactive workshop, Lea Korsgaard (Zetland) and Liesbeth Nizet (Mediahuis) explore how Zetland opens up its editorial process to readers — from showing how stories are made to involving members in shaping them. The same trend is emerging in culture, politics and other fields, where communication is increasingly tightly controlled. How do you navigate these competing interests as a journalist? And how do you keep producing distinctive stories in a world of closing doors?

So where does that leave you, as an individual journalist, on these platforms? Spaces once valued for dialogue, like X, are now crowded with conspiracy theorists and constant conflict, while alternatives such as Bluesky have yet to come to life. In this session, we’ll explore how journalists can deal with the realities and challenges of today’s social media landscape.

Redacties zijn vaak terughoudend om actief of aanjagend te zijn bij hulpprojecten. Raken we zo onze neutraliteit kwijt? Tegelijk waarderen abonnees het als ‘hun’ krant betrokken is. Hoe ga je als journalist om met die balans? Hoe betrek je lezers, blijf je objectief, organiseer je zo’n project, en wat leren we van succes- en faalverhalen?

Saskia Belleman, Journalist van het Jaar 2024, is rechtbankverslaggever bij De Telegraaf en gespecialiseerd in strafzaken en maatschappelijke thema’s als partnergeweld en femicide. Met haar jarenlange verslaggeving en de podcast Zij is van mij brengt ze structureel geweld tegen vrouwen onder de aandacht van een breed publiek.

Haar werk draagt bij aan het agenderen van femicide in de Tweede Kamer, waar inmiddels wordt gewerkt aan betere registratie en preventie. Saskia spreekt over de rol van media in het zichtbaar maken van deze problematiek en het belang van blijvende politieke aandacht.

Floris Noort, managing editor Newsroom at De Telegraaf, takes us behind the scenes of the digital transformation of one of the Netherlands' biggest news platforms. Every day, he works with the questions: what news do we publish and how do we ensure it reaches as many readers as possible?

In a time of polarisation, public pressure and internal division, how do newsroom leaders stay grounded this interactive session, former Reuters Bureau Chief Emma Thomasson will guide participants through real-life editorial leadership dilemmas — from handling activist voices and sensitive topics, to balancing neutrality with inclusion and navigating generational divides.

Through case-based group work and open peer exchange, this session offers concrete tools and honest conversation for those leading the newsroom through complexity — with integrity, fairness and confidence.

Democracy is under attack worldwide, and journalists find themselves on the frontlines of this battle. How do newsrooms navigate increasing political pressure, legal threats, and violence while maintaining editorial independence? Join Olaf Koens (conflict journalist), Beata Balogová (SME Slovakia), and Stephane Alonse (NRC) as they share experiences from countries where press freedom is deteriorating. Moderated by Karel Verhoeven (De Standaard).

How can a photographer convey the deeper layers of a story, especially when it comes to long-term projects? For Ilvy Nijokiktjien, it’s about more than just capturing a moment: it’s a matter of sustained involvement, building trust, and taking the time to truly get to know people and situations. By combining photography and video, Ilvy can let the silence of a still image speak, while also adding the dynamism and emotion of moving images.

In this lecture, Ilvy will guide you through her working process: from the first contact to the completion of a project that can sometimes take years. Ilvy will share her experiences working on themes such as racism, migration, and climate, and demonstrate how visuals and sound can reinforce each other. Ilvy will also discuss the challenges of balancing distance and closeness, and the importance of ethics and respect when telling someone else’s story.

Een massaprotest van boze boeren of studenten, een onvoorziene demonstratie bij een gemeentehuis, rellen die in de korte tijd overslaan van het ene naar het andere stadsdeel; opvlammende gebeurtenissen die vaak uit het niets lijken te komen. Bij onderzoek blijkt dat meestal niet zo te zijn: is er in appgroepen of via Snapchat bijvoorbeeld al veel contact geweest. Maar hoe kom je als journalist in die groepen terecht? Gebruik je dan je eigen naam? En hoe zorg je ervoor dat je vervolgens niet zelf digitaal lastig wordt gevallen?

NRC-redacteuren Georgia Oost en Lian Hof vertellen over hun eigen ervaringen, o.a. tijdens de zogeheten Maccabi-rellen in Amsterdam, en horen graag hoe collega’s bij andere titels dit aanpakken.

Natuurlijk kun jij interviewen. Je hebt al kílometers op de teller staan. Maar vaak heb jij een waanzinnig voordeel boven een interviewer die werkt met camera en microfoon: jij hebt de tijd. Wat nou als je maar drie minuten mag maken, en je je gast een pittige uitspraak wilt ontlokken?
